Engineering Leadership Engineering Leadership seeks to provide a paradigm shift in engineering education with the development of a revolutionary degree venturing into a novel interdisciplinary integration of skills and knowledge in the context of leadership and innovation. Offered exclusively at The University of Texas at El Paso, Engineering Leadership is taking today’s great minds and nurturing them to become the brilliant, innovative leaders of tomorrow. Engineering Leadership (E-Lead) is the first degree of its kind in the nation. E-Lead goes well beyond being a program, an initiative or a cluster of classes added to a degree plan. By collaborating with key entities such as Olin College, West Point, and other key educational institutions, the curriculum designed for E-Lead transforms the classroom experience of engineering students. E-Lead moves beyond content and focuses on project application and the integration of the students’ skills and knowledge in real-world scenarios. E-Lead creates a culture of innovation, excellence and collaboration from its students, meant to extend beyond their years of undergraduate study. Grounded in leadership development, E-Lead maximizes each student’s collaborative capacity. Mentoring character and personal growth helps students reach a level of personal and professional achievement that goes beyond traditional instruction. FOCUS ON CAMPUS: The Department; E-Lead A FOUNDATION IN LEADERSHIP The Three Pillars of Engineering Leadership Engineering Leadership views leadership as a cycle in which leaders develop leadership traits in themselves, which perpetuate to those being led, and those around them. At the core of Engineering Leadership is the effort to incite an understanding of leadership practice founded on the development of character, competence and capacity in its students. Character, competence and capacity are the foundation of our leadership style and the three pillars upon which Engineering Leadership classes and content are structured. When the three pillars of Engineering Leadership are put together, the result is a strong graduate – one who is ready to face the challenges of the 21st century. Character Engineering Leadership is passionate about mentoring leaders with character. Character is a determination of personality, values and conduct. We believe in shaping individuals at their core. To achieve this, the Engineering Leadership faculty and students cultivate an environment where individuals are mentored to develop an understanding of themselves, to become people of integrity and to nurture selflessness. Without character, leadership is incomplete. Good leaders care about the improvement of the lives they come in contact with. This one trait alone greatly reflects the intentions of the leaders in this program. Competence Effective and efficient leadership requires an elevated level of subject mastery. Collaborative, project-based learning experiences help students apply leadership theory, and synthesize and identify those leadership opportunities, all while applying their technical knowledge. Engineering Leadership further develops competence by diversifying subjects and allowing students to focus on concentrations that pique their interests. Engineering Leadership gives students a synthesized, multidisciplinary education that prepares them to thrive in today’s world. Capacity Engineering Leadership students are presented with diverse team-based challenges that incorporate multiple disciplines from day one of class. From project managing to research, students have the ability to excel at diverse roles, even teaching, widening the future possibilities available to them. Engineering Leadership develops capacity by providing students with multiple opportunities to apply and synthesize diverse competencies, thereby building experience. a leap in education redefining the way engineering is taught Educational emphasis on leadership, innovation and pedagogical format is what sets E-Lead apart from other engineering degrees. E-Lead follows the flipped classroom teaching method. In this age of technology, information is readily available everywhere. In the flipped classroom, students do individual learning outside of class. Homework, projects and inquiries are done in the classroom with the mentorship of the professor. E-Lead classes are taught in a studio environment where students participate in project-based learning. E-Lead’s multidisciplinary projects play a critical role in the E-Lead educational paradigm because they challenge students to apply their knowledge to deliver a tangible project. This learning experience requires students to work in highly collaborative groups and, unlike many other engineering degrees, E-Lead students develop a vital sense of community among themselves and their professors, allowing students to learn the power of teamwork. Community is built in and outside of the classroom to ensure the E-Lead experience is more than a classroom activity. The E-Lead program also develops a culture where students actively contribute to their own education and where individual contributions are valued and important. E-Lead students strive for excellence because they have a sense of ownership and power over their own education. Most people view leadership as a process or endpoint. We perceive it as a cycle in which leaders develop leadership traits in themselves and then go on to perpetuate those traits in the people around them. At the core of Engineering Leadership is the effort to kindle an understanding of leadership practice founded on the development of students’ character, competence and capacity. This effective approach creates new leaders who step up to take the place of those before them. Character, competence and capacity are the three pillars upon which Engineering Leadership classes, activities and experiences are structured. It is the foundation of our leadership style. EXPANDING FRONTIERS concentration Based Learning Engineering Leadership’s goal is to provide students with a broad education with emphasis on a sub-discipline of their choosing. Because students will be exposed to various engineering disciplines, they will be given the opportunity to take ownership of their degree and choose their field of focus through concentration electives. These concentrations are critical to the educational objectives of the program. MBA The business concentration allows students to choose from six options: Management, Accounting, Economics, Marketing, Entrepreneurship and General Business. These options follow the same structure as degree minors in the College of Business Administration offered for non-major students. This provides students the advantage of taking classes for an approved minor that will count toward their own bachelor’s degree. The completion of the business concentration courses will leave students within two courses of receiving a business minor. education The education concentration provides students with the opportunity to earn their state certificate for secondary education. These students must complete a full-time student teaching internship and must pass two required State of Texas board exams: one in their preferred teaching certification area and the second in pedagogy. This means Engineering Leadership education concentration graduates will be certified to teach grades 8-12 in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and/or Engineering. This ...
